Move over Megadodo Publications. A mobile game company has announced plans to bring The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy- to your iPhones and iPads.
The titular central text of Douglas Adams’ legendary sci-fi series was intended to be the most complete collection of knowledge on the universe for any spacefarer. Now, Hothead Games says it’s going to bring it to our “mostly harmless” planet. (Video: BBC)
The relatively unknown company teased development plans back in May, but were tight-lipped on details. With its latest announcement, a writer for Ology says, so far so good.
“The press release alone contains towels, vogons, how to survive in space, Milliways, the Babel Fish, and something called a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Who knows what wonders await in the app proper? … In the series, the Guide itself is an electronic text; it’s fitting that a real-world adaptation will be available through Apple’s ubiquitous devices.”
For some, this latest announcement comes as a disappointment. Following Hothead’s cryptic statements in May, many were hoping for a revamp of the notoriously hard text-based game. A writer for Game Pro clears the air.
“...the new project doesn’t appear to be a game at all. Rather, it’s an interactive iOS-based touchscreen edition of the titular Guide, allowing fans of Adams’ work to imagine they’re holding the device described in the novels.”
Not much has been released on the app other than some press materials and a few screen shots, but writers are Mashable cringed like they were listening to a Vogon read poetry when they saw them.
“They have an unfortunate cartoonish look about them, suggesting this app is going to be closer to the Disney movie version made after Adams’s death than the classic BBC version he wrote.”
