Even before GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Perry began his crusade for votes -- he faced another battle -- an achey breaky back.
But instead of a hot pad, or a chiropractor, Perry took quite the unconventional route to fix the problem. ThirdAge writes...
“Texas Gov. Rick Perry had an untested surgery last month in order to fix his bad back -- using stem cells. …the GOP presidential candidate had stem cells taken from fat in his own body, grown in a lab and then injected back into his back and bloodstream.”
Perry’s move is garnering harsh criticism from the medical world -- with some experts saying, Perry sets a dangerous example for his followers.
The Los Angeles Times spoke with one stem cell researcher, who says...
“The best case scenario is that ‘nothing happens,’ she said. The worst case is that the patients die from their treatments. ‘The hype is so huge, everyone’s looking at it as a solution for everything,’ she added.”
The Texas Governor has already upset much of the scientific world after claiming global warming is false and Texas public schools teach creationism. MSNBC discusses Perry’s scientific views...
MATTHEWS: “Where are we at in our global struggle for economic excellence when we challenge the scientific method itself?”
HALPERIN: “Well, I don't want to -- I don’t think we should overstate Rick Perry's relationship with science. He just had back surgery with an experimental stem cell procedure. So he obviously believes in science to some extent. The views that he has onthose issues are in the main stream of the Republican party.”
Making a mistaken medical move is one thing. But now some doctors are saying Perry could’ve broken the law by having the procedure.
HULIQ has more...
“Some doctors are asserting that the experimental procedure is beyond federal guidelines. However, it is unclear at this point how much the governor may have been aware of, regarding the risks and federal guidelines.”
Stem Cell research is always a hot topic on the campaign trail, but a writer for Gather clarifies this use of stem cells sparks very little controversy.
“Dr. Daley confirms that [Perry] is pro-stem cell research (though very few people have found a reason to be against the use of adult stem cells, so that's a rather moot point).”
