Politics and allegations of flip-flopping tend to go hand in hand.
Now the Democratic National Committee is going after Mitt Romney - airing a television ad to prove its point.

The ad -- called Mitt v. Mitt -- portrays the presidential candidate taking different stands on issues like abortion and immigration. It is scheduled to air in six swing states including Virginia, North Carolina and New Mexico.
Here’s a look:

Voice over: “From the creator of ‘I’m running for office for Pete’s sake’, comes the story of two men trapped in one body. Mitt vs. Mitt.”
Romney: “I will preserve and protect a women’s right to choose.”
Romney: “The right next step is to see Roe v. Wade overturned.”

CNN’s Political Ticker notes a possible motivation behind the DNC’s ad -- according to former candidate-turned-Romney supporter Tim Pawlenty -- it means the Dems are threatened by Romney.

But an MSNBC analyst reports the DNC’s new ad might actually help Romney, not hurt him.

ANCHOR: “Isn’t the DNC simply doing Romney's work for him by always talking him up as the likely nominee regardless of the rise of other candidates?”
REPORTER: “Well, I think the DNC has had to do the work of the other candidates for them. I mean usually by now you would see some kind of engagement between the candidates and campaigns, which we’re not really seeing.”

Still -- portraying Romney as a flip-flopper isn’t a new line of attack. In fact -- as The Atlantic notes -- rivals within his own party have taken the same route. And it’s already cost him at least one big endorsement.

“...the flip-flop line … [is] often cited by conservative pundits who wonder if the former governor can be trusted as a guardian of their ideology. In endorsing Newt Gingrich for president, the Manchester, N.H. Union Leader alluded to Romney's chameleonic tendencies.”

Romney’s campaign has already started fighting back with more than 12 state-level conference calls set in each state where the ad will play.  Politico’s Alexander Burns thinks Romney’s fast rebuttal will help propel him forward in his battle for presidency.

“Every opportunity to turn the 2012 race in to a direct Romney-Obama battle is an opportunity for Romney to make the case to his party that he’s the only candidate in the race prepared to go head to head with the Democratic Party apparatus.”
