Disney is considering making Netflix wait 28 days before it sells new DVDs to the company – meaning you wouldn’t be able to rent a Disney DVD until almost a month after it went on sale. Warner Brothers, Fox and Universal Studios have already imposed such a delay. Medacity says …
“It’s been a tough go at the DVD-by-Mail service for Netflix over the last several months, a service that was once the cornerstone of the company’s business.”
Harsh consequences for Netflix. But Disney CEO Bob Iger’s logic for the delay is based on its low DVD and BlueRay sales to consumers. At a meeting with investors Iger stated that:
“the industry has continued to suffer on the sell-through side.”
And according to Gizmodo, if Disney goes through with this plan, Netflix won’t be the only company affected.
“If Disney does push for the delay, expect it to ask the same of Redbox and other rental services as well.”
The entertainment giant says it will also hold back its video content from new streaming services like UltraViolet. It has plans to launch its own on demand mobile streaming service, called Key Chest. However, it is still under development.
