“A sports reporter from Mexico’s TV Azteca, Ines Sainz, allegedly faced harassment from Jets players in the locker room following practice on Saturday.” (CNN)
Ines Sainz –the self-proclaimed “hottest sports reporter in Mexico” is at the center of the sexual harassment complaint. Fox News reports another female reporter filed the complaint with the NFL after witnessing Saturday’s events.
“Head coach Rex Ryan and assistant coach Dennis Thurman were purposely throwing passes in her direction along the sidelines. You can see of it here—her own video. ... Later, other reporters say Jets players in the locker room were making cat calls and rude comments when Sainz walked in to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez.”
After originally tweeting she almost died of embarrassment, Sainz now says it wasn’t that big of a deal. A New York Daily News reporter disagrees, while a USA Today veteran tells CNN – this is pretty rare.
TERI THOMPSON, NY DAILY NEWS: “It’s been a long battle for access and equal treatment for women in sports—or who try to cover sports. And it’s sad to think that we still have to deal with an issue like this.”
CHRISTINE BRENNAN, USA TODAY: “There have been hundreds—maybe even a thousand—women who are covering sports today for newspapers, radio, TV—many in locker rooms. Yesterday the NFL, college football on Saturday, Major League Baseball this weekend (and they do a fabulous) and there were no incidents.”
On MSNBC, Tamron Hall reads dueling viewers’ Tweets. One says blame the players. The other – blame the bosses.
“'It doesn’t matter what she was wearing. Thank you for being our voice.’ Because I said to Michael Smerconish, ‘Why does it matter what she was wearing?’ Another person says, ‘If TV outlets hired journos instead of bikini models, to do their sports reporting, maybe their female reporters would get more respect.’ I think a lot of female reporter—journalists—would take issue with that.”
Finally, on HLN Joy Behar asks Sainz the question directly: Was she asking for trouble, or at the very least, attention?
BEHAR: “You’re wearing tight jeans, et cetera. People say you shouldn’t be shocked if the men respond to you with cat calls. How do you respond to that?”
SAINZ: “No, absolutely no. I think I have one style. I make like, I make—I don’t know—over 250 interviews one-on-one with the best players in the world for different sports and it’s my style."
So do you Sainz has a serious complaint – or did she have it coming?
