Is Black Thursday- the new Black Friday?

Some shoppers say Thursday night deals are stealing the turkey’s thunder-- and effectively-- ruining Thanksgiving.

HLN has both sides of the feud that’s pitting pumpkin pie against delicious deals.

“Stores say people said they’d rather stay up late and shop after the big dinner instead of waking up early. But of course the other side is people who have to miss the holiday because they have to work. Or you go to your holiday and members of your family aren’t there... Some people say it just ruins that sense of family and togetherness.”

Among the early-openers: Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Target. Some of those retail employees are so bummed about their lost day off--

They’ve started petitions on Change.org-- asking their employers to let them enjoy the day with their families.

But as the Washington Post explains-- the start time back-up has been a long time comin’.

“Thanksgiving has long been in danger of getting subsumed by Christmas. Every year, Americans bemoan the encroachment of pine trees and presents on pilgrims and pumpkin pie, a phenomenon the retail industry calls ‘Christmas creep.’”

For those longing for the days of the 5am rush-- it’s about ideals.

This Facebook campaign called “Respect the bird” says Thanksgiving deserves to be more than just an afterthought.

But as an analyst for CNBC explains-- to retailers-- ideals take a backseat to the bottom line.

“It’s all about getting momentum early and the retailers are out there promoting...It’s all about those retailers, you going to the store, having a good experience on Black Friday weekend so that when you say ‘You know what, I’ll go back here the week before Christmas to finish my shopping list.”

22 million people shopped on Thanksgiving Day last year-- up from 18 million in 2009. A retail strategist tells the LA Times-- if that number gets bigger this year-- Black Thursday will be new normal.

"Once you let the cat out of the bag and open early, it's very hard to put it back in...”
