Fox News chairman and founder Roger Ailes encouraged former CIA Director David Petraeus to run for president.

That according to reporting from The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward — who obtained audio from an interview with a Fox News reporter who traveled to Afghanistan to talk with Petraeus and to pass along a message from Ailes.

“I got something to say to you directly from Roger Ailes. ‘With no one else in the room I hope? I’m not running! ‘Okay’!”

KGET adds...

“Roger Ailes planned to quit his job and run a campaign if General David Petraeus ran for president.” … At one point the analyst suggested that News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch might bankroll the campaign.”

The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward reports, in that posted audio, the network’s national security analyst KT McFarland is heard telling Petraeus — on behalf of Ailes — to accept a position no lower than Joint Chiefs of Staff and if that wasn’t available, to run for president.
Here’s CNN.

“Wanna continue to serve my country... Quite significantly meaningful position and there’s all about two of those in the world, y’all really need to shut your mouths. ‘I’m only reporting this back to Roger.’”

Ailes told The Washington Post the pitch to Petraeus was more of a joke.
But not everyone’s laughing.

“So I mean, the accusation that Fox is nothing but the propaganda arm or the broadcast arm of the Republican National Committee is right.”

Petraeus told the Fox News reporter his wife would divorce him if he ran for president.
Petraeus resigned his post as CIA director last month after it was discovered he had had an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell.
