‘Zero hour.’
That’s what Libyan rebels say is upon Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi.
Reports say the capital city Tripoli was rocked by fighting Saturday night. Here’s CNN.
ANCHOR, CNN:“Muammar Gaddafi’s government and the rebels are offering very different takes on what’s going on there. Opposition leaders say they’ve taken their revolution into Tripoli’s neighborhoods. …One of Gaddafi’s sons says the rebels are ‘losing’ every battle. Our people there are hearing sporadic gunfire in several areas this morning.”
This marks the first time in the six-month uprising that the battle-- has arrived on Gaddafi’s doorstep.
And from Zawiyah -- a correspondent for MSNBC says -- that’s almost literally.
RICHARD ENGEL, MSNBC:“There is also fighting, pockets of resistance in several neighborhoods in Tripoli, including one just about 500 yards from Muammar Gaddafi’s presidential palace. So we can confirm that there is fighting in Tripoli itself, including right on the doorstep of Gaddafi’s palace.”
Col. Gaddafi made an audio address over Libyan state TV late Saturday-- calling the rebels “rats.”
And while he didn’t show himself -- his information minister took to the podium to deny reported rebel advances.
MOUSSA IBRAHIM, LIBYAN INFORMATION MINISTER: “Yes, some militia have infiltrated two or three neighborhoods, but they were faced by strong resistance, and the fighting was over in thirty minutes.”
Finally-- a writer for TIME is already looking ahead to possible victory.
A political science professor in Benghazi tells him -- even if they topple Gaddafi in Tripoli, the rebels’ National Transitional Council will have a tough time settling regional differences among the ranks.
"All the rebel activity is in the east... The council is here, the television station is here. The foreign diplomats. Everyone. If we impress ourselves on the West, they will resent it... Trying to disarm the brigades after Gaddafi falls will be much harder than now. If the NTC does not move on this, it will face a large problem."
