Doctors in England are worried about the rising demand for female genital cosmetic surgery, also know as “designer vaginas”.
“More than 2000 operations were performed on women on the National Health Service last year. Thousands more are thought to be performed privately.” (The Independent)
Robert Rho, a plastic surgeon from New York, said in a phone interview with Bloomberg.
“I’ve been doing this over 13 years, and it has become much more popular. We’re doing more cases in recent years.”
But London gynaecologist Sarah Creighton and her colleagues are worried.
“It’s shoking, particularly because we are seeing girls who are really young. They are asking for surgery that is irreversible and we do not know what the long-term risks of the procedure might be.” (BBC)
Patients resorting to this procedure cited various restrictions on their lifestyle.
“These restrictions included inability to wear tight clothing, go to the beach, take communal showers or ride a bicycle comfortably, or avoidance of some sexual practices.” (Breitbart)
The International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology cites among other reasons dissatisfaction.”
“An increasing self awareness of the genital area, physical discomfort, comments from a partner and watching TV programs on cosmetic genital surgery.” (BJOG)
