News broke Thursday that a Dallas teenager, who was accidentally deported to Colombia by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, a year ago, is finally coming home. WFAA has the grandmother’s reaction.

“Oh you know how I feel. I'm just speechless … It was worth it. I got wrinkles under my eyes. I've aged. Look like I'm 80 now. But it's alright. It's okay.”

Jakadrien Turner allegedly ran away from home in 2010 and some how ended up in Houston. ABC explains how she went from Houston, Texas to Colombia.

“15-year old Jakadrien Turner was deported last April after she was caught shoplifting in Houston. She lied to police and said that she was Colombian. So authorities deported her without verifying her story. Her grandmother was finally able to track her down in South America.”

Jakadrien had no ID on her when she was apprehended. Still it’s pretty hard to believe that federal and state agencies weren’t able to identify her at all. CNN explains how she fell through the cracks.

REPORTER: “Well this is what I’ve been told by the immigration officials. She was fingerprinted on the local level. She was fingerprinted again when she was passed over to ICE. But nothing matched anyone that was in the systems. So it was essentially, in the words of one person I spoke to, it was like a clean slate. This person was, in their view, brand new to them.”

The family is considering suing the agencies involved. WTKR talked to the family lawyer who says there is more to this story than a simple screw-up by ICE.

“There has to be something behind this 15-year-old girl ending up in Colombia, beside the fact that ICE dropped the ball. You know how do you get a nickname of Mexican and Latino decent when you don’t even speak Spanish.”

And a reporter for KHOU agrees and says this mistake paints a very troubling picture of ICE and other federal agencies.

“Still, in this decade after 9/11, why U.S. authorities could not identify a 15-year-old girl is a question troubling many lawmakers.”

Finally, the grandmother seem not to care how this all develops. She is simply happy that Jakadrien is finally coming home.

“I’m gonna hug her tight and let her know we love her. And everything is going to be alright. Whatever problem she got, we can get past it. Just forget the past and walk forward.”

ICE director of public affairs says it is ‘fully and immediately’ investigating the matter.
