Demi Moore is filing for divorce from her husband of six years, Ashton Kutcher.

The announcement comes two months after Kutcher allegedly had a one-night stand with a 22-year-old woman in San Diego on the weekend of he and Moore’s sixth wedding anniversary. Here’s the statement from Moore, via X17online:

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton … there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

Kutcher Tweeted a response, saying, "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."

Celebrity news blog DListed says the news is hardly a surprise after all of the cheating rumors. Blogger Michael K says sarcastically:

“The shocking news that nobody saw coming … My fingers are practically numb with shock …”

But People Magazine points out Moore, 49, and Kutcher, who’s 33, had been working to rebuild their relationship. They’d been seen …

“ … showing up together for Yom Kippur services and were spotted building a campfire at a lake near Santa Barbara, Calif., alongside their Kabbalah instructor.”

But, the stress appeared to be too much. The pair also faced a cheating scandal a year ago, when another 22-year-old woman said she slept with the Two And A Half Men actor.

Still -- The Washington Post’s The Reliable Source chooses to remember the pair like this:

“You can’t say they didn’t have a good run, by Hollywood standards, anyway: Six years of marriage, despite an age difference that drew skeptics from the start. Their red-carpet life seemed drama-free for years...”

Divorce negotiations are usually messy business, especially when the couple is worth an estimated 290 million dollars. But the LA Times says this divorce means more than dollars and cents.

“This could be the first divorce where the fate of a Twitter handle — Demi goes by @mrskutcher — is part of the negotiations.”

And in a move representative of his maturity, Kutcher has unfollowed Moore. After all this controversy, Celebuzz wonders if the actor’s career can survive.

“With his new role in Two and a Half Men, Ashton’s star power is likely as high as it’s ever been … will the divorce news make people turn against Ashton?”
