It’s makeover time! 52 superheroes from the DC universe are getting a fresh new look that will break with 76 years of history in order to keep them dynamic and relevant.

While many specifics are still top secret, the DC Comics blog published some previews on Thursday. Artist Jim Lee told USA Today they are redesigning costumes and altering the physicality of many heroes and villains to make them more contemporary.

"You're trying to have your cake and eat it, too. You're trying to keep the iconic elements there, but at the same time freshen up the look so that people are intrigued by what they're seeing and hopefully come and sample the wares."

DC Comics is also renumbering its entire line of superheroes, starting with all-new No. 1 issues. But CNN explains some fans are not too happy with the changes.

“For readers emotionally invested in the stories of superheroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, this kind of announcement can be threatening. Based on fans' Twitter reaction, it's obvious that anxiety, or at the very least skepticism, has set in.”

But others don’t feel is such a bad idea…

ESCAPIST MAGAZINE: “It's a bold move that risks alienating hardcore fans, but then, doesn't everything? Discovering how DC will reboot big stars like Batman and Superman, in addition to the rest of its roster, should make the coming weeks very interesting.”

Finally, DC Comics will also offer a digital copy of the comic books available for download the same day new issues are in stores. One comics blogger thinks this is a great business move.

“Agree or disagree, digital comics are the way of the future … Sure, there's not the physical aspect of it … [but] giving fans the option though to buy an issue digitally the same day it hits stores makes the book so much accessible. You don't have to worry about timeframes …”

The first book to be released in this new line, Justice League No. 1, will be out August 31st. It teams up artist Jim Lee and writer Geoff Johns, reuniting the famous roster of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
