This is your political rundown for October 23, 2008.
We’re running down political perspectives from MSNBC, CNN, FOX News and France 24.
MSNBC’s Morning Joe took an overview of all the polls.
“We’ve got Reuters, Obama up 12, Washington Post 11, Gallup, 9, interesting, AP has him up 1. But if you look inside the states Joe, this is what we’ve been talking about. Some of these states are still very swingalbe, if you will. Virginia at 10, but Nevada at 5, North Carolina, 4, Ohio at 4, West Virginia at 9, for McCain. If you look at Mason Dixon poll at Florida, dead heat, and also Virginia within the margin of error.” (www.msnbc.com)
CNN’s Lou Dobbs also took the view the presidential race is much closer than is being reported.
“Good evening everybody. The latest opinion polls showing the presidential race is much more volatile than a lot of national media organizations have been suggesting. Two polls in fact give Sen. Obama a lead of 10% while one poll from the Associated Press says that Obama is leading Sen. McCain by 1%. Another poll, the battleground poll, showing a lead of only 2%. Many in the national media had declared the McCain to be ended.” (loudobbs.tv.cnn.com)
From polls to Sarah Palin’s appearance.
CNN’s Campbell Brown focused on the $150,000 U.S. Dollars spent to update Sarah Palin’s wardrobe.
Brown says there’s a double standard for men and women.
“Compare that to the attention given to Barack Obama’s $1500 suits. Or John McCain’s $520 shoes. There is no comparison. Women get scrutinized based on appearance far more than men. And look, I speak from experience here. When I wear a bad outfit on the air, I get viewer e-mail complaining about it. A lot of e-mail. Seriously.” (www.cnn.com)
FOX News anchor Bill O’Reilly also takes the perspective the money spent on Palin for wardrobe and makeup is just another attack on the republican ticket.
“This morning, NBC’s news correspondent Andrea Mitchell reported that Gov. Palin’s clothing is very expensive. And Miss Mitchell is apparently upset about that. That’s the usual from NBC news, trying to diminish the McCain-Palin ticket anyway they can.” (www.foxnews.com/oreilly)
The Cafferty File on CNN took a different approach.
He reported that Sarah Palin had spent $21,000 in travel expenses in airfares and hotel for her children.
“How do you present yourself any kind of candidate of reform when the practices you employ put you in the same category of every other two-bit, sleazy, opportunistic politician that has come before you.” (caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com)
Finally - other countries are doing their best to explain the U.S. Election.
France 24 has a segment called – “elections for dummies.” Here’s a sample.
“We can divide the American electorate into three parts, a third Democrats, a third Republican, and the biggest third Independents. But about a third of those Independents are really Democrats - they vote most often Democrat – the other third really vote most often Republican. It’s that third in the middle that really make the difference.” (www.france24.com)
