This is your Political Rundown for October 27, 2008.

Only one full week before the U.S. Presidential Election – media outlets are pitching in with their perspectives.

We have viewpoints from FOX News, the New Yorker, CNN, MSNBC and Newsweek.

Let’s start with FOX News – Geraldo Rivera took a satirical look at the intensity of the final days.

Is maverick McCain all that stands between us and a Marxist?  You may recognize this famous quote. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs. That’s from Karl Marx, how is Senator Obama not being a Marxist if he intends to spread the wealth around? Are you joking? Is this a joke? The Dems aren’t laughing. The station is banned. Is this what an Obama press room would look like? Everything’s gone according to plan except for one small flaw  -- aaaaaaaawwwww!” (www.foxnews.com/geraldo)

A commentator for The New Yorker said simply that the McCain campaign was out of ideas.

Barack Obama had already been accused of betraying the troops, wanting to teach kindergartners all about sex . . . What was left? The anticlimactic answer came as the long Presidential march of 2008 staggered toward its final week: Senator Obama is a socialist.” (www.newyorker.com)

Pundits are also talking about what happened to the McCain campaign.

Brit Hume from FOX News said one factor hit harder than anything else.

Did the campaign go south? Did Sarah Palin spend too much money, or the party on her behalf, spend too much for her clothes – was that the problem? NO! What happened was the mortgage meltdown. The financial crisis.  The once in a century disaster. What could have been possibly have been worse than that? That’s the story here.” (www.foxnews.com)

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough took a different view.

Barack Obama has spent $105 million on ads – $105 million in two weeks. John McCain in the same time only had 24 dollars. Let me tell you actually it’s the subprime juxtaposed with the situation in Iraq. NO! It’s the fact that one candidate puts 3, 4, 5, 30-second spots up.” (www.msnbc.com)

From yet another point of view, CNN’s John King says it’s up the McCain campaign to avoid mistakes.

But inside the campaign, most senior advisors believe they are likely to lose – they’re not giving up, but looking at the battle ground states they are in a very difficult position right now, and Wolf this is not helpful, they need to be near perfect if not perfect if they are going to have a chance in this election.” (www.cnn.com)

One Newsweek columnist looked at life after the election in a memorandum to the eventual president-elect.

There will be days when you will wonder why you worked so hard to get this job. What will make it so difficult is not just all that awaits, but the constraints that will limit what you can actually do…. This is a sobering moment in American history. You begin with a good deal of popular support, but mandates must be replenished.” (www.newsweek.com)
