Two wartime comrades have remarkably been reunited by chance after 67 years. The D-Day heroes both returned to Normandy’s Beaches on the same day to visit their old battlefield.
Bill Betts and Clifford Baker were last together when they stormed the Beaches of Normandy as two young soldiers on D-Day. According to The Sun-
“Bill was shot during the assault and returned to Britain — never again seeing his friend. But on a trip to the D-Day Museum at Arromanches he was amazed to see the last signature made in a book of remembrance was Clifford's.”
This is South Wales tells Bill’s reaction to seeing his old friend’s signature.
"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his name but there it was in black and white... I asked when Mr Baker had been into the museum... It was only 20 minutes before and his coach was now boarding in the car park. I decided I had to take the chance to catch him.”
Determined to reunite with Clifford, the Daily Mail recounts Bill’s frantic search to find him-
“Bill scoured the car park in search of his missing friend. Meanwhile the mayor frantically gave an order for departing coaches to be stopped. Then, to cheers and applause, Clifford came down the steps – and into the embrace of the comrade he was forced to leave behind all those years ago.”
What are the odds of them meeting like this? The Stratford Observer calls the heartwarming story-
“... An extraordinary twist of fate and an incredible chance meeting”
