A California couple is celebrating their Homecoming king and queen crowns.
But this isn’t just any couple. Rebeca Arellano and Haileigh Adams are the first lesbian couple to snag the title. KSWB has their story.
“Rebecca tells Fox 5 she has never expected so much attention, receiving Facebook friend requests from total strangers and messages from people inspired...”
The win drew cheers around the world from gay rights activists and supporters. The Daily Mail has more.
“The girls started dating in their sophomore year, which was the year Rebeca came out. … Haleigh and Rebeca said they were not planning to run for the titles but were encouraged by the support they got from from family, friends and teachers.”
And ABC has video that says -- they won handily -- to a crowd of cheering and supportive peers.
(Chanting, announcement, cheers)
But Arellano tells ABC -- anonymous students at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego posted disparaging comments on her Facebook -- saying the titles should go to a boy and a girl. To that, The Inquisitr posted Arellano’s own response.
“But there’s no other way for us to run as a couple. It’s not really fair for us not to have the right to run as a couple. For all the girls who think tradition should be continued, go back to the kitchen … and allow your husband to do whatever he pleases to you. Think about the meaning of tradition when you use it in your argument against us.”
The Inquisitr reports -- Arellano and Adams’ parents are both supportive of their relationship.
