In Sri Lanka - the world watches as Tamil Tiger rebels ignore a 24-hour ultimatum from the government, to give up or face attack. The groups have been in a civil war for more than two decades.

Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.

At least 49,000 civilians tried to flee Tamil Tiger-held territory in a small area in the northeast part of the country.

Al Jazeera English explains dire conditions at a temporary hospital, where civilians injured from the clashes were treated.

“According to media reports, this makeshift facility is out of antibiotics, blood reserves, essential medicine and medical items – anything that might make it a temporary field hospital. And even those who could donate blood, cannot. Malnourishment is a result of months of not having any adequate food supplies."

The BBC reports the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or LTTE have accused the government of killing about 1,000 civilians during its latest military offensive, but the government denies the allegations.

Sri Lanka’s the Sunday Times provides a different view. It shows a video clip of the LTTE trying to prevent the civilians from fleeing into the government-controlled territory.

“Footage obtained today from the unmanned area of the Air Force shows armed LTTE cadres attempting to prevent large groups of civilians from moving towards government territory by shooting at them.”
(The Sunday Times)

Another Sri Lankan newspaper The Island sided with the government’s action to attack the LTTE and move civilians to government-held areas.

“There is hardly any difference between [the LTTE leader] and the Somali pirates … or the terrorists who attacked Mumbai last year. The US and India swung into action, eliminated terrorists and rescued their citizens. Therefore, Sri Lanka's right to neutralise terrorists and rescue her citizens cannot be questioned on any grounds.”

Finally, the BBC takes a look at the possibility that Sri Lanka’s long-standing civil war could end.
While some agree the rebel forces are likely to lose their last stretch of land… one analyst still questions prospects for long-term peace in the island nation.

“Resentment at the way the government has prosecuted the war and the reasons why it began it in the first place … have not been addressed … So while the battle will be over imminently the war could well drag on indefinitely.”
(BBC)

So do you think the Sri Lankan civil war will end soon?
