Ann Coulter is no stranger to controversy or partisan politics. But the conservative pundit appeared to break new ground in both categories with this zinger on FOX News:

“I mean, that’s why our blacks are so much better than their blacks. To become a black Republican you don’t just roll into it. You’re not just going with the flow. You have fought probably against your family members, probably your neighbors. You have thought everything out. And that’s why we have very impressive blacks in our party.”

Almost immediately, media outlets feasted on Coulter’s words.  Al Sharpton and his MSNBC panel teed off.

MELISSA: “I just want to know who’s Black you are Reverend Al?”

AL: “I’m not owned by either side… It’s interesting to me. Is Mr. Cain saying that he’s owned by Coulter and that crowd? Because she says ‘our’ against ‘their’. I don’t fit in either category. I wonder if she has some ownership papers on Mr. Cain.”

Coulter isn’t backing down, and reaffirmed her position on HLN’s Joy Behar Show.

But a HyperVocal blogger says Coulter’s debate style is better suited for different kind of TV show:

“Coulter borrows her tactics from professional wrestling, so none of this should be taken seriously. Like Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock, Coulter has core beliefs and a regular personality that she dials up to 11 when the camera’s red light is on. She’s the ultimate heel, the self-made villain.”

Some relish the villain role.  But Big Think blogger Kris Broughton says Coulter’s verbal body slams might be more harmful than helpful for Republicans:

“What the Republicans really need right now... are the kind of people who can turn people on, not off... But people like Coulter and her ilk are so boxed in by their own rhetoric that they can’t afford to jeopardize the allegiance of the ‘us versus them’ audience they have spent years cultivating.”

Not everyone is targeting Coulter alone.  Your Black World blogger Dr. Boyce Watkins says Coulter’s remarks simply highlight a trend from both political parties.

“Coulter’s remarks also spoke to the peculiar fight between liberals and conservatives, who are trying to toss around the black community like two pimps arguing over a prostitute.  Rather than adjusting their platforms to fit issues that matter to Black America, each party is only able to point out the fact that they believe the other group abuses Black people more than they do.“

Currently, Herman Cain is leading national polls in the GOP primary.
