The only thing conservatives like about big government is the defense budget. They want to cut every other service. It would be just if all war hawks were dragged out of bed and shipped To the Arabian desert with a rifle and binoculars in their hands. Their job would be to find Osama.

It is hard to justify putting your life on the line for a government that you see as corrupt. Furthermore, Afghans don't have a sense of national identity the way that we think of it in the States. A highly tribal country, the nationalist values that we identify with military service here isn't manifest there. It also strikes me as paternal to have the make up and mission of a sovereign police force dictated by a foreign power. Haven't we learned our lesson? U.S. training is what brought the Taliban to pre-eminence in the first place. This has all happened before and it will all happen again.

While it would be wonderful to get U.S. troops out of Afghanistan, it surely seems as if there are continuous troubles there--and that we probably shouldn't leave just yet if we want to weaken the Taliban. I understand that the U.S. army perhaps does not have the proper skills or people to start police stations, etc. But, for pete's sake, couldn't they get some of those people/resources sent to Afghanistan? It seems like a small step that could (at least partially) help a much larger conflict.
