Videos of cops chasing criminals are common, the bad guys never get away. But what happens when the bad guy turns out to be a cop?
35-year-old Fausto Lopez, a Miami police officer drove in excess of 110mph -- just so he could make it to work on time. The highway patrol car chasing him belonged to officer D.J. Watts.
Officer Watts chased Lopez for nearly 12-miles, before he came to a stop. The Miami Herald reports Lopez simply ignored the Highway patrol car during the seven-minute-long pursuit. Because of this, Watts had to arrest Lopez at gunpoint.
And right here, he’s being taken into custody. Talk about an awkward return to HQ.
One badge arresting another, there’s got to be some kind of protocol, right? A highway patrol sergeant told WFOR Officer Watts treated it like any other traffic stop.
“Based on her observation of the driving pattern of the vehicle, she conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver to determine why he was driving in that fashion. He was subsequently charged for the criminal violation of reckless driving.”
The Miami Herald follows reports officer Lopez has been released and his fate is still undetermined.
Miami Police spokesman Moss said the Florida Highway Patrol alerted them to the episode right away.
“We immediately launched an administrative investigation, … However, we’re taking a back seat, and watching the criminal process as it takes place. At the conclusion of the criminal process we will take whatever administrative action we deem necessary.”
