iPhone 4S’ report card is here, and it passed. Unlike the 4, which was downgraded for antenna issues, Consumer Reports said they officially recommend Apple’s newest device -- the first time since 2009.
“In special reception tests of the iPhone 4S that duplicated those we did on the iPhone 4, the newer phone did not display the same reception flaw, which involves a loss of signal strength when you touch a spot on the phone’s lower left side while you’re in an area with a weak signal.”
That lower-left spot was the reason for Antennagate in 2010, a problem Apple tried to fix by offering free bumper cases. But PCWorld notes this time, the fix is in the phone and Apple hints on their site...
“Apple's iPhone 4S product page doesn't specifically mention the Antennagate controversy, but notes that the new phone uses two antennas to transmit and receive, ‘so call quality is better.’”
Better, but still not enough to beat its Android counterparts.
Consumer Reports’ top scorers -- Samsung Galaxy S II, Motorola Droid Bionic and sever others boasting larger displays that the 3.5-inch 4S screen. But a writer for VentureBeat questions the publication’s rating criteria. (Video: CNET)
“[Consumer Reports] also rated the LG Thrill higher than the iPhone 4S because of its ability to create 3D photos and videos, both relatively gimmicky features. It’s a recommendation that, honestly, makes me think twice about trusting anything Consumer Reports says now.
And Android’s better grades are keeping consumers from picking the newest Apple. If you’re looking into a Siri-equipped 4S, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore tells CNET, you’ll have to get in line.
“Wait times among online vendors, including Apple.com, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint, are averaging around 14 days in the U.S. and one to two weeks in other countries.”
After some 4S battery complaints, Comsumer Reports gave the it a “very good.” However, Apple claims the lesser ‘Batterygate’ was due to a few bugs in iOS 5. The group will test Apple’s update when it becomes available.
