Facebook-- and Google.

Two tech titans battling it out for social media turf.

Circles --versus lists.

+1-- versus “like”.

And now-- Hangouts -- versus video calling.

On June 29th- Google launched Google+

A social media platform complete with a group chat option called “hangouts”

And just a few days later-- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced this--

Skype video-chat integration.

So how does it stack up to the “hangout” video chat format in Google+?

The biggest difference--

Facebook’s video calling feature is one-on-one.

While the G+ hangout allows up to ten people to video chat at once.

The more the merrier, right? Depends on who you ask. Emil Protalinski writes for ZDNet- Google triumphs for technicality.
Facebook wins for practicality.

“If I fire up Facebook Chat right now, approximately 10 percent of my Facebook friends are on my contact list. Half of them are online, and I can ask them to video chat...If I open up Google+ right now, one person is available to use the video chat feature. In other words, the multi-video chat aspect is completely useless to me.”

But TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington says- both features are good- for different things.

“...for now, there’s really no comparison between the products. Facebook video chat is great to talk to friends one at a time. Google Hangouts is great for group chat. There’s no real overlap between the products at all.”

And a Fortune blogger adds- Google+ and its video hangouts aren’t likely to draw crowds of users away from Facebook...

“But after today, the question that has long dogged Google -- whether it can innovate in the social space and not just develop creative duds -- should be put to rest. For the first time in a while, social media is a two-horse race.”

Zuckerberg says he isn’t ruling out adding a group video chat feature to Facebook in the future.
