The media are going wild with the David Letterman - Sarah Palin feud that began with this controversial joke on The David Letterman Show.

“There was an awkward moment in the 7th inning at the Yankees game when Sarah Palin’s daughter was knocked up by Yankees shortstop Alex Rodriguez.”

Palin’s 14 year old daughter Willow actually attended the Yankee game with her, not Palin’s 18 year old daughter Bristol. Friday morning she appeared on the Today Show to denounce the comment…

“Regardless, it was a degrading comment about a young woman. I hope that people start rising up and deciding it’s not acceptable.  No wonder young girls have such low self esteem in America.”

And David Letterman had this response to Palin - on his CBS show

“These are borderline.  But again, in an act of desperation to get cheap laughs, which is what I’ve been doing for the last 30 years.
These are not jokes made about her 14 year old daughter.  I would never never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14 year old girl.  I mean look at my record its never happened.”

Was this actually David Letterman’s fault? CNN’s Showbiz Tonight’s Jane Velez-Mitchell takes this perspective…

“I think the bottom line that there is a comedy writer on the letterman staff who is deep doo doo tonight because he/she got their facts wrong.  These jokes were intended to be about Bristol the infamous 18 year old.”
“It’s the Palin’s who have brought in the words perversion and rape.  Their outrage is over the top…and their motives suspect as well.”

But many media commentators disagree.  MSNBC has an alternate perspective…

“I agree with her [Palin] and I never thought I would say that.  What he said was despicable… If someone said something like that about my daughter I would want to deck them.”

So whose side are you on in this feud?  Should Letterman lose his show? Is Palin igniting controversy to gain publicity?
