The town of Boulder, Colorado was all-ears on Tuesday after a coonhound by the name of Harbor took the title for the “longest ears on a living dog” in the Guinness Book of World Records. Harbor’s owner, Jennifer Wert, reminisced about Harbor as a puppy when talking with the Guinness Book of World Records.
“He used to trip on his ears, walking, and down the stairs, he used to roll down the stairs because he would trip on them and he still sometimes trips on them but not as much as he did when he was just a little pup.”
Combined-- the 8-year-old pup’s ears are longer than two feet. His right ear is 13.5 inches, his left -- 12.25.
To put that in perspective- the Daily Mail writes...
“According to Guinness World Records 2012, Harbor’s ear-span is greater than the height of the world’s shortest man, Junrey Balawing, who is 23.5 inches tall.”
The press is enjoying this long-eared dog just as much as passersby. Here’s a pun from CBS’s Terrell Brown.
“This morning a hound from Boulder, Colorado holds the new record. ‘Do you ears, hang, lowwww.’ for the longest ears on a living dog.”
According to the Denver Post, the long ears on a coonhound aren’t just for record- breaking...
“As it turns out, the ears aren't there for better hearing. The dogs use their ears to sweep the ground of the scent of the animal they are tracking.”
Tigger, a bloodhound from Illinois, took the world record title for THE longest ears in 2004. However, he passed away in 2009, leaving leeway for a living dog to take the title. Tigger does still hold the record for the longest dog ears ever, though.
According to BBC, the genes that made Harbor's magnificent ears won't be passed down to another generation because he is neutered, but he did come from a litter of 12, so there is still hope.
