CNN anchor Fredericka Whitfield has apologized after she referred to the gunmen who opened fire outside of a Dallas police station as "courageous and brave."

"It was very courageous and brave, if not crazy as well, to open fire on the police headquarters, and now you have this scene, this standoff," Whitfield said.

Her comments on Saturday sparked a bit of social media outrage, with some accusing her of "glorifying" the attack.

And the Fort Worth Police Officer Association was quick to demand an apology on Twitter, calling the comment "outlandish."

Whitfield did make her apology on air Sunday.

"And yesterday, during a segment on the Dallas Police Department attack, I used the words courageous and brave when discussing the gunman. I misspoke. And in no way believe the gunman was courageous nor brave," said Whitfield.

It does not appear she is facing any punishment from CNN.
