Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a new warning to Syria Monday, threatening action if the country uses any of its chemical weapons.
Here’s Good Morning America.

“Clinton traveling in Europe today warned the Syrian government that the United States will respond if Bashar al-Assad deploys chemical weapons in the fight against rebel forces in his country.”

According to the New York Times, there’s been signs of heightened activity at some of Syria’s chemical weapon sites in recent days but it’s unclear what exactly is happening.

The paper quotes an American official saying that “the activity we are seeing suggests some potential chemical weapon preparation.”

And that preparation suggests it’s not just the mere movement of stockpiles among the country’s chemical weapons sites.

According to The Guardian, the Syrian regime is “believed to have stocks of mustard gas, sarin nerve gas and possible VX, another nerve agent.”
Here’s CBS This Morning.

“She did not say there was new information that would suggest an attack is imminent but she reiterated chemical weapons are a red line for the United States.”

Meanwhile, Syria’s foreign ministry released a statement saying, “Syria has stressed repeatedly that it will not use these types of weapons, if they were available, under any circumstances against its people.”

In July, Syrian officials warned they would deploy chemical weapons for foreign defense purposes.
The New York Times reported it was the most “direct confirmation” ever of the country’s chemical weapon supplies.
Shortly thereafter, news began spreading of possible weapons testing in one of Syria’s chemical weapons research centers.

According to the Washington Post, Syria is thought to possess the world’s third-largest supply of chemical weapons.
