A Citigroup report says Amazon is building a phone for release in late 2012. A writer for The Wall Street Journal says this "rumor” is pretty reliable.
“You see this sort of supply-chain reports from China a lot, and you can take them with as much salt as you want. It's a little unusual for Citigroup to come out and say this, they are a little more stayed and reserved than some of the other analyst shops, so that's why this report is particularly noteworthy.”
A writer for Gizmodo says, while the Kindle Fire was built well for its purpose...
“A Kindle phone would pretty much kick all of these lovely qualities down a gulch....
When was the last time you read an entire book on your smartphone? The mini screen is great for YouTube or personal video, but are you going to watch a film on your phone unless you're stuck on four hour bus ride and that's your only diversion?”
But a writer for CNBC Tech Check says an Amazon phone might not be so crazy after all.
“...My iPhone has become my primary tool for Amazon ordering; whenever I'm shopping in a store (or running out of something at home), I'll scan a bar code into the Amazon app and instantly comparison shop. Tablets — even 7-inch tablets — are too cumbersome for that kind of use case.”
Forbes curiously specific speculations say the Amazon smartphone will have a 4-inch touch panel display, an 8 mega pixel camera, and cites the report saying...
“...the phone’s production cost will range from $150 to $170 and that Amazon carriers could be selling it at cost, undercutting the market.”
Finally, there are also reports of an 8.9-inch Amazon tablet being built, which some tech media say could be the rumored Kindle Fire 2.
