A 29-year-old mother in China has given birth to a big baby. Chun Chun is so big … he’s broken a record. At 15-and-a-half pounds, he’s believed to be the heaviest Chinese baby ever. NTD Television interviews the mother fresh off delivery, where she compares this pregnancy to her previous one.

“ … my body was more clumsy than when I was pregnant with my daughter. My belly was bigger than it was then.”

But, the mom says she never expected her baby to be THIS big. The parents are both of average size, and mother and son are both in good health. The Global Post has the translated quote from a proud baby daddy -- who’s happy his son was born in the lucky Dragon Year.

“‘My wife was not different from other pregnant women. She ate and drank normally as she should. But she's given birth to such a big, fat son. Today is the first day of spring in the Chinese calendar and he’s a ‘dragon baby’. I feel very happy.’”

NTD Television reports the previous record for heaviest baby in China was 15 pounds. And to put Chun Chun’s weight in perspective, 9News has info from a doctor at the hospital.

“[The] head of the obstetrics department at the hospital where Chun Chun was born, said the baby was ‘twice as heavy’ as a normal newborn.”

But could this only be the beginning of lots of baby news in the nation? The BBC reports China is ready for a baby boom because of the Dragon Year.

“We believe the dragon baby is more lucky, clever, and smart ... Doctors say there could be 10 percent more births this year.”

No word on whether any more will be 15-pounds.
