Amid tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan-- China and Pakistan have reaffirmed their all-weather friendship.

CCTV reports on the Pakistani Prime Minister’s recent visit to China.

Reporter: “Gilani praised China for its continuous support even during the most difficult times. He said Pakistan considers China a true partner, saying his country was stand by China always.”

Gilani: “We appreciate the warmth from China. In all difficult circumstances China stood with Pakistan. Therefore, we call China a true friend.”

The two nations signed three agreements about economic and technical cooperation. According to Pakistan’s Daily Times- China will provide Pakistan with 50 new JF-17 fighter jets.

“Not only will the aircraft be handed over within weeks, China will also foot the bill initially. … The speedy delivery of ... this aircraft ... will ... send a message to the world that Pakistan’s defense is not weak... This agreement will send a clear message to the world on which side China stands.”

While some worry China will use the recent deterioration of U.S.-Pakistan ties to boost its influence, a Huffpost World blogger doubts China’s ability to fill the vacuum if the U.S. ever cuts aid to Pakistan.

“Chinese aid is generally quieter and more subtle with fewer conditions attached and driven primarily by economic considerations... Overall, Pakistan does not enjoy a high strategic priority in China's foreign policy calculations.”

But an analyst from Beijing Foreign Studies University tells CNN- China has good reason to defend its relationship with Pakistan.

Prof. Jimeng Teng -- “The Pakistan is playing a major role as a bridge, bridging China to the Muslim world. Pakistan could also be an another route for China: to ship oil and petroleum and other resources into China.”
CNN -- “China is Pakistan’s main arm supplier. Beijing is also offering aid and investing in new nuclear power plant and ports.”

The Chairman of Abbott Pakistan and India has a different idea about why China is backing Pakistan. He explains his theory on the BBC.

“Pakistan at this moment feels a bit isolated, and I think China is giving support to Pakistan, because China recognizes the sovereignty of a country, and thinks no country has the right to violate the sovereignty of any country.”

Finally- an international affairs expert points out in an article for People’s Daily Online- the China/Pakistan relationship is strong-- and isn’t falling apart anytime soon.

“The China-Pakistan relationship is based on mutual respect regarding core interests...Looking into the future, China and Pakistan will stand together regardless of any change in regional and international situations...”

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and Pakistan.
