In the face of a horrific chimpanzee attack that left Charla Nash severely disfigured, her family says they have hope, she will now have a new normal life.

NBC has more.

Charla’s Daughter: “For her to make an expression, something that we’ve had to take from her words before, it’s just nice that her body language can express how she feels.”
Ann Curry: “She’s hitting all the milestones doctors say, breathing on her own, smelling, eating solid food. It really is amazing.”

Charla received a full facial transplant in May, two years after her neighbor’s chimp Travis mauled her in Connecticut. It wasn’t until this week that doctors released photos of her recovery.

WCVB reports.

“Charla Nash appears to be making a remarkable recovery right now at Bringham and Women’s Hospital. Before we show you though the photos of her transformation, we want to warn you it may be difficult for some people to see this. This is what Charla looks like right now following her face transplant in May. She is 57 years old. Take a look at what Charla looked like before a Chimpanzee attacked her two years ago.”

Charla’s hands had to be removed after complications from pneumonia. But one psychologist fears her loss may go beyond the physical.

“Our faces are etched with the experiences of our lives. And so, when we have an experience such as the one that Mrs. Nash had, where she loses her face, there is not only the trauma of the physical attack, the pain, the fear of losing one’s life, but maybe losing the fear of one’s identity.”

The chimp may have crushed Charla’s body, but not of her spirit. Though too weak for a television interview, she reportedly sees one thing clearly - a bright future.

In a press release from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Charla says...

“I received a new face and two hands that will allow me to be independent once again and able to be part of society. Losing the new hands is just a bump in the road of my recovery. I believe that one day I’ll have two hands to help me live as a blind person with confidence.”
