From the White House to the news desk. Chelsea Clinton has a new job in journalism thanks to NBC.
The network hired former President Bill Clinton’s daughter to work for the series “Making a Difference” that airs on “Nightly News”. She’s also scheduled to make appearances on the show “Rock Center with Brian Williams”.
But the latest NBC hire has Slate Magazine pointing out a trend... Daughters of big time political figures are breaking their way into the news biz.
“Clinton is the latest political daughter to break into the TV news ranks Jenna Bush Hager is a coorespondent for NBC’s “Today” show and Megan McCain is a contributor on MSNBC.”
NBC News President Steve Capus told TIME magazine Clinton didn’t come to him saying ‘I want to be a TV star’, but instead in July she was ‘kicking around what to do next.’
CNN’s Howard Kurtz isn’t a fan of the network’s move - callling it a cheap gimmick.
“Neither of these young woman have any journalistic experience. It’s a way to put viewers in the seats by trotting out another big name... I also think that when Bill Clinton has his next book come out or is going to me make an exclusive appearances during the 2012 campaign. Do you think NBC might have the inside track on that sort of thing? We’re talking about the Secretary of State’s daughter.”
LA’s KTTV points out Chelsea’s profile in the public eye seems to be doing a 180 -- noting her shy past with the media.
“We’ve got one tweet here from Jodie... ‘Supreme irony of Chelsea Clinton becoming NBC reporter. I’m pretty sure she’s never granted an interview.’ and I’m pretty sure that that is accurate actually. Actually, she kind of hated the media for a while in terms of us journalists, but now she’s going to be joining all of us here.”
Chelsea was not available for an interview about her new job title, but gave this statement to the New York Times:
“I hope telling stories through ‘Making a Difference’ — as in my academic work and nonprofit work — will help me to live my grandmother’s adage of ‘Life is not about what happens to you, but about what you do with what happens to you.’ ”
Chels starts her new gig immediately.
