Time to update your iCal. Scratch a September release of the iPhone 5. Make that October instead. Yes -- it’s all rumor. Isn’t everything Apple?
Gizmodo led the September scuttle -- after receiving an email tip from a source claiming to be an AT&T employee. The email read:
“...vacation requests for the end of September will be denied due to an ‘event blackout.’ Historically the only time they’ve done this was for an iPhone release. So we’re looking at the last two weeks of September.”
But All Things Digital claims, “They’re wrong.” An unnamed source -- surprise! -- tells All Things D to expect the 5 in October. The source also shot down previous rumors, saying,
“I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch.”
Could this be a reliable source or just another misleading tip? Business Insider thinks there may be some truth to it... noting the second source.
“....let’s not forget [All Things D] was co-founded by Walt Mossberg who is as close to Steve Jobs as anyone in the media world...”
So who is the mystery man behind the Apple curtain? Slash Gear has its own ideas about this anonymous tipster.
“...it’s possible that some of the tips might in fact be an attempt by Apple itself to correct some of the speculation at present. In that way, the company could establish more realistic expectations and avoid mass disappointment -- and a potential share price hit -- in September.”
What’s fact and what’s fiction? iPhone users will have to wait until October to find out -- maybe.
