Attention Apple fans! An mobile accessories company might’ve slipped the design of the iPhone 5.
Thursday morning Case-Mate released pictures of its new iPhone 5 cases but pulled the page once it started to get publicity. (Video: Geek Sugar)
The site replaced the pictures with a sign up box for notifications for when the cases hit the market.
But the damage had already been done. Some members of the tech media have already drawn some conclusions based on the widely-circulated Case-Mate images.
“We’ve heard tons of speculation that the iPhone 5 will be thinner and lighter than the current model and these cases suggest it will have tapered edges and a slim profile as well.” (BGR)
Also, images show an iPhone 5 with the mute button moved, and an added aluminum finish. But a writer for Mac Rumours says the images probably aren’t revealing anything new.
“It is difficult to point to Case-Mate's posting as further proof of an imminent redesigned iPhone 5, as the cases are likely based on the same leaked design document used by Asian manufacturers… But it is interesting to note that even relatively major U.S.-based case manufacturers are investing in designs for cases based on this form factor.”
And TekGoblin suggests the whole thing was a publicity stunt.
“If the leak was somehow intentional it was well played by Case-Mate because it did draw a lot of attention.”
The iPhone 5 is expected to come out sometime in October -- but for Apple fans, it seems that’s not soon enough. According to MSNBC two thirds of current users plan to buy the new model.
“Right now it is looking more like October. It has actually been more than a year since the last iPhone so once they pass that 12 month mark the countdown really starts going.” (MSNBC)
