Officials are still trying to piece together the case of a father and his two sons almost killed by a car bomb in Monroe, Michigan. The father, lawyer Erik Chappell, was driving his two sons to football practice when the car exploded.
Chappell was released from the hospital, but his two sons remained under hospital care as of Wednesday afternoon. According to Monroe News, one of the boys was in the passenger seat where the bomb was located, causing serious damage to his lower extremities.
“There were no witnesses in the vicinity where the bomb exploded. It was believed that Mr. Chappell was able to drag his sons from the car, which quickly became engulfed in flames.”
WJBK interviews Monroe police lieutenant Charles Abel on the incident.
“Police tell Fox 2 the SUV did not experience a mechanical issue, it appears criminal at this point.”
LIEUTENANT CHARLES ABEL: The investigation is continuing, we are providing our services to the ATF and whatever else they need from us.”
Detroit Free Press interviews associates of Chappell, who were shocked at the news. A fellow divorce attorney says...
“I have no idea why someone would want to do this... He was very good to work with. We always got along fine.”
But that wasn’t the same story found by the local Monroe News.
“Sources, however, said Mr. Chappell had been receiving threats. He is a divorce attorney also involved with several high-profile Monroe County cases, including hot dog stand owners who sued the city in 2009 after they were banned from operating their carts.”
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is leading the investigation and offering $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest.
