Another day - another comic book made into a movie -- and the latest is Captain America.
Starring Chris Evans, Marvel’s Avenger received a 73 percent fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes after its opening weekend.
But in its review, KABC -- didn’t exactly give the superhero flick a passing grade.
“There is nothing super or even special about this story. A weakling is transformed into brawny Captain America during WWII using technology that wasn’t even conceivable back then. A deranged Nazi has a secret weapon and Captain America has to stop him using only his strength and his super shield blah blah blah boring...”
And big-name movie critic Richard Roeper says -- in comparison to more famous superheroes like Superman, Captain America just doesn’t stack up.
“Captain America has never been as popular as Superman or as complex as Tony Starks/ Iron Man. He doesn’t have Batman’s toy chest nor does he possess Spiderman’s sense of dazzle. Unfortunately the same could be said as Chris Evan’s Captain America the first Avenger, looks great tries hard but sometime he is just red, white, and blah.”
ADDING:
“ Captain America might work better a part of a team involving Iron Man and everybody else. As a stand alone super hero he is a true b-lister.”
So the first Avenger joins the discussion -- are moviegoers tired of seeing superheroes battle megalomaniacs?
A writer for The Wrap tells American Public Radio -- Roeper’s “b-list” comment is on the mark.
“That brand of narrative -- the hero -- is not going away. And I think the core properties that we all love -- Superman, Batman, Spiderman -- there'll always be a place for them. The question is ... can you turn something you've never heard of into a global box office success? I think to some extent, the jury's still out on that one.”
Captain America pulled in 65 million dollars in its opening weekend.
