Border Patrol officers in Arizona discovered a new way drug smugglers are getting their contraband into the U.S. CBS has the details.

“Those are canisters filled with marijuana ... The border patrol said today the smugglers used a pneumatic cannon to fire them 500 feet over the fence and into the U.S.”

Those are the types of cannons that are used to shoot t-shirts and hot dogs at sporting events.

Border Patrol agents were able to recover the 33 canisters with 85 pounds of marijuana before anyone else could. WOAI says it was worth a good chunk of money.

“The street value of the drugs was over $42-thousand dollars.”

An agent told ABC this new level of creativity in smuggling is most likely a response to the efforts of the U.S. border patrol to stop this kind of activity.

"The more and more successful we are, the more and more unique they become in trying to get the drugs across."

The Atlantic Wire reports this event isn’t even the tip of the iceberg as far as crazy drug smuggling schemes are concerned.  Just last month, a Jeep got stuck on the California border fence while trying to drive over the fence on a ramp.  But wait... there’s more!

“We haven't mentioned the drug-running airplanes, unmanned drones or mules who carry tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs in the most unthinkable places of their bodies.”

And Nick Gillespie, the editor-in-chief of Reason Magazine Online says it isn’t surprising and drug smuggling won’t stop with this slightly ridiculous plan because...

“Next to drug users - who are generally unparalleled in their McGuyveresque ability to turn anything into a means of getting high - drug smugglers may be the most inventive group of people in this and any other universe.”
