Who dunnit? That’s the question Debbie Violette is asking dog owners in her apartment complex.
As a last resort Violette is DNA testing all residents’ canines - a move most often seen on CSI.  Here’s KABC with the mystery.

“An apartment manager in New Hampshire is taking extreme measures to make sure the tenants clean up their dog waste. Debbie Violette is fed up with dog owners who refuse to pick up after their dogs. So she purchased DNA sampling kits to identify the perpetrators.”

The next step in finding the suspect - all dogs must voluntarily give up a DNA sample to keep on record.

“The swab of the cheek will be taken at that time and it will later help identify a dog who has done its business and whose owner has neglected to clean it up.”

The supplier of the DNA kits says about 20 apartment complexes nationwide order from them. And a writer for Gather says the more, the merrier.

“Not only is it disgusting, but it’s completely inconsiderate and something needs to be done... Hopefully, more and more apartment properties will adopt this wonderful and ingenious policy.”

DNA testing a few dogs in one apartment complex; harmless, right?
But a blogger for Forbes wonders if this development could lead to a countrywide doggie-DNA database.

“Our governments, local, state and federal, by their very nature, love to jump onboard any program that is extensive, expensive, intrusive, and produces data... A quick Google search of ‘DNA Testing on Dog Poop’ yielded numerous reports, including an entire city in Israel, Petah Tikva, requiring all owners in the municipality to undergo the tests.”
