Just a little coffee a day keeps the blues away – according to a new study that says coffee lowers the depression rate among women. Or at least -- female NURSES -- the study’s sample. Here’s CBS News.
HOLLY PHILLIPS: “In the Archives of Internal Medicine, they looked into 50,000 women over the 10 years, and they followed how much coffee they were drinking. What was surprising is that the more coffee they drink, the less likely they were to actually develop depression.”
Good news for coffee addicts! Previous studies has shown links between coffee and a reduced risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer and stroke. Dr. Seth Berkowitz tells HealthNews in an article published by MSNBC...
"Taken together, these results reassure coffee drinkers that there seem to exist no glaringly deleterious health consequences to coffee consumption."
But some experts are afraid the results may mask the darker side of too much coffee. In an article published by USA Today, a professor from Texas A&M’s Health Science Center College of Medicine says...
"This may lessen concerns that caffeine consumption will have a negative impact. … Caffeine at high doses has long been associated with worsening of anxiety and other psychiatric illness, and at times this has led to lingering concerns that it might be best to limit its use."
Others are suggesting alternatives to the study’s conclusion. According to Psych Central--
“It may be that women who drink coffee are somehow different in other ways than women who don’t drink coffee and that is the real reason... Or maybe the reason is that the nurses live in cloudy cities. I wonder if coffee has the same effect for those of us blessed with sunny weather.”
Either way, coffee lovers have another reason to linger in Starbucks. A writer says in Calgary Herald…
“I can tell you joe is my personal saviour. Every morning my sweetheart brings me one as I’m struggling to wake up and join the day. A few hits of my soy latte, and the everything looks much, much better. My faith in the world is restored!”
