“Campbell’s chicken noodle soup tastes good...and it’s good for you! It’s made with lots of tender chicken and plenty of golden egg noodles, simmered carefully in a flavorful chicken stock...” (Daily Motion)
...well, not simmered carefully enough for some conservative bloggers, who are calling for a boycott on Campbell’s soups.
The issue comes from Campbell’s line of soups in Canada that are ‘halal’... meaning they follow Islamic dietary guidelines. Conservative bloggers are up in arms-- saying the company doing the halal-certifying is really in cahoots with terrorist organizations. First we turn to Stephen Colbert, who not only tackled the issue, but also did what he does best - made light of it.
“Well brace yourselves because right-wing blogs are reporting that Campbell’s has a line of halal soups. Even our super markets aren’t sacred... How dare they construct a tower of Islamic soup so close to Ground Beef? (flash) Oh they called me crazy when I said baby carrots are trying to turn me gay... well now carrot soup is trying to turn me Muslim!”
The post that spurred the uproar is from conservative blogger Pamela Geller, who says she is not against halal foods- just who is certifying them... The Islamic Society of North America.
“Campbell's Soup Canada is about to go halal. No biggie, right? Wrong. It is doing so under the auspices of the Islamic Society of North America, a Wahhabi-funded racket that is said to have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood...”
But a writer for a New York University blog says the boycott is absolutely ridiculous.
“Should I befriend some Islamaphobe bloggers and force them to eat Campbell’s soup...? Will that convince the right-wing bloggers that most Muslims they interact with are... not only harmless, but good and kind people? You don’t have to love Islam, but you can’t hate (or slander) its people.”
...but Geller’s boycott message is not falling on deaf ears. Food Manufacturing reports a number of conservative groups have joined Geller’s call -- but that naysayers in the U.S. might be overreacting.
“The controversial Ground Zero mosque in New York and Campbell's Canadian-made tomato soup have nothing in common, one would think... What seems to be lost in the American blogosphere is the fact that Campbell's halal soups are not offered in the U.S., and the company says it's not planning to.”
The Islamic Society of North America, which has certified halal foods since 1988, has denied ties to any terrorist organizations. So, what do you think? Is Campbell’s supporting an organization linked to terrorists? Or do these bloggers have their noodles in a knot?
