As the violence that started in London Saturday night continues-- and spreads-- U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron met with his government to create a plan of action.
Euronews has his presser.
DAVID CAMERON, U.K. PRIME MINISTER: “We will do whatever is necessary to restore law and order onto our streets. The police are already authorized to use baton rounds, and we agree that Cobra, that while they aren’t currently needed, we now have in place contingency plans for a water cannon to be available at 24 hours notice.”
You heard him -- water cannons and baton rounds. That may sound somewhat harsh, but surprisingly enough, most Londoners aren’t against it. The Global Post reports –
“Online pollster YouGov conducted a survey of Londoners in the last 24 hours and asked what measures the police should be allowed to use: 90 percent said the police should use water cannons to disperse rioters; 78 percent said tasers were okay; 65 percent said plastic bullets should be used; and 82 percent wanted a curfew imposed.”
Some sixteen thousand police have been patrolling the streets of London-- trying to reduce looting and vandalism.
But, some citizens are taking matters into their own hands--The Londonist reports:
“...in Dalston on Monday night a group of Turkish shop owners chased offa gang threatening to riot in their street. Eltham residents also turned out to protect their neighbourhood after Lewisham and Woolwich were attacked by mobs. Sales of baseball batson Amazon have apparently risen by 5000%, presumably as a by-product of communities’ determination to defend themselves.”
But while Cameron deployed thousands of police officers to the streets and made hundreds of arrests, some Londoners still believe his efforts aren’t enough. Here’s KABC:
LOCAL WOMAN – “Where is the police? The police station is up there.”
ELEX MICHAELSON, KABC – “London’s vacationing political leaders returned today to an earfull. Many believe 16,000 police officers aren’t doing enough.” LOCAL WOMAN – “I think we should bring the army down and show them what real guns and real bullets are all about.”
Cameron recalled Parliament from its summer recess in order to discuss plans for London on Thursday.
