For the second straight week, Panthers’ rookie quarterback Cam Newton has thrown for more than 400 yards.
And this game, he broke even more records, including most yards thrown by a rookie in NFL history. ESPN reports he also became the first player to throw two consecutive 400-yard games to start a season. Analyst Eric Allen was wowed.
“I mean this guy is outstanding outside the pocket as you know he can beat you with his athleticism, and in the pocket making strong throws down the field, and you look at the rookie stats, and you see a lot of heavy run. I mean he led the team in rushing up to a point, throwing the ball down the football field. Cam Newton is the real deal for the first two weeks.”
Last year, the Panthers passed the ball 53 percent of the time. So far this year- 64 percent. A CBS fantasy sports contributor says this is Cam’s team.
“When you look at what this team is doing on offense, they’re saying we would rather put the ball in Cam Newton’s hands every single play basically, who cares about the run, let’s go with Cam Newton all the time. Over 400 yards passing again, and 53 yards rushing and a touchdown. I’m buying it.”
While Newton is rewriting the record books, he is still winless in the NFL. Sports Illustrated’s Andrew Perloff suggests, Newton still has some learning to do.
“Well, I mean he threw three picks, so this is the Cam Newton we expected, still big yards, but those turnovers obviously cost him the game. That’s what we expected coming into the season- a young quarterback making mistakes.”
But radio analyst Charlie Pierce argues, Newton’s just coming into the league at the right time, with passing and offense dominating the sport.
“The rules adjustments have gone too far the other way and now it’s pretty much a pitch and catch league. The problem is all these rules were done for the safety of the players. I don’t want to see them ruled back. Sooner or later the athletes who play defensive back and the coaches who scheme them will find a way to cut this down."
In the last year, Newton was won a BCS championship, a Heisman trophy, was selected first overall and now is in the record books. Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wonders how much longer this can go on.
“I mean, at some point, this has got to stop. Right? He’s putting up numbers in the real NFL like you could with Bo Jackson in Nintendo’s ‘Tecmo Bowl’ video game.”
