Wide receiver Jerry Rice wrote the book when it came to NFL records, but the Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson has begun his own re-write of the NFL record book.

Saturday night at Ford Field, Johnson broke Rice’s single-season receiving record with a 26-yard reception from quarterback Matthew Stafford.

"Finally the record – boom. Twenty six-yard gain,1,871 and that’s a record, and he’s such a great guy."

The same night, the man they call Megatron also set another record for most consecutive games with over 100 yards receiving.

Oh, and, he also tied Michael Irvin’s record of 11 games in a season with 100 or more yards.

You might think the guys’ whose records he smashed might be a little upset. But, no, they’re actually happy for the Johnson. Last week Jerry Rice said he’d be the first to congratulate him.

"You really don’t want anyone to break your record, but I know what this guy stands for, he works hard, and he’s a freak of nature."

And Dallas Cowboys great Michael Irvin had only good things to say as well.

"They know the ball is going to Calvin Johnson and he continues to make great plays, so you have to give him credit and say, “Wow, what a great job.”

The Lions’ 31-18 loss to the Falcons dropped them to 4-11. So, Johnson’s play has been one of the few reasons to celebrate in what’s been a disappointing football season in Detroit.
