Backstage drama hits the Oscars. KCBS explains what’s jeopardizing the 2012 Academy Awards.

“Director Brett Ratner, whose movie, ‘Tower Heist,’ is out in theaters came under fire for using a gay slur Friday night after a screening of the film at the ArcLight theater in Hollywood. He has since apologized, but now he says he doesn’t want the issue to be a distraction during the Academy Awards show.”

Ratner resigned after the slur and a raunchy discussion of his sex life on Howard Stern. The Washington Post suggests the Academy should’ve seen this one coming.

Too bad the academy didn’t Google Ratner before announcing his was their ‘big get’ to produce this year’s show ... Had the Academy done so, they would have realized Ratner’s comments of the past few days are just par for the course.”

As soon as Ratner split, the blogosphere blew up with rumors host Eddie Murphy would step down, too. And that he did. CinemaBlend explains his decision.

“Murphy was likely resistant to hosting the show in the first place, and agreed to do it only thanks to his working relationship with Ratner … [he] earned the power long ago to work only with those he chooses, and it seemed unlikely the Academy would be able to choose another producer with the sway to keep Murphy in the fold.”

But Good Day LA host Jillian Reynolds says this is all a huge mistake.

STEVE EDWARDS: “Was he right to quit the Oscars? ... Nineteen percent of you said, yes, he was right. 81% said, ‘no.’”
JILLIAN REYNOLDS: “Yeah- it’s silly. He’s a single guy. He was talking about his dating life. Blah-da-de-blah. It’s, you know, he would be a great Oscars producer. He would. Period. Separate the two.”

And MSNBC argues losing both men is a big blow to the show.

“Murphy's decision is, in publicity terms, much worse news for the Academy than the Ratner situation … The show will not only have to hustle to find a new host and producer, but whoever is chosen will face the public image that they were a fill-in choice.”

For now, the show’s second producer, Don Mischer, will take the helm. No word yet on a new host for the February 26 telecast.
