New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may have committed his first fumble of the NFL season... off the field.

On Wednesday, Brady commented on the team’s home opener and how fans should prepare. What he said may surprise you…

“They’re drinking early, getting nice and rowdy. It’s a 4:15 game, a lot of time to get lubed up. Come out here and cheer for their home team.”

Lubed up? Hmmm. Patriots PR was quick to clarify. Within an hour actually, saying Brady...

"...wants everyone to drink a lot of water, stay hydrated. Drink responsibly.”

Water. Exactly. A National Post blogger isn’t buying it.

“Brady totally meant water. How silly are we? Make sure you are well hydrated … and everyone gets a free kitten with admission.”

Put ESPN Radio’s Jared Max in the same camp.

“Yeah…ok. That’s ridiculous. That’s nothing short of ridiculous, Scott. Yeah that’s insane. What Tom Brady said was unacceptable. The cover up, if you want to call it, is equally unacceptable. You know that Tom Brady is going to issue an apology.”

But Fox Sports’ Greg Couch doesn’t think Brady was talking about alcohol at all.

“Pessimists will continue in disbelief. But there is no way Brady would have been so irresponsible as to promote pregame drinking now. Last month, two men were shot after a San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders preseason game.”

Still, will Tom Brady get a pass because he’s well…Tom Brady? Mike Florio of NBCSports Pro Football Talk seems to think so.

“If other guys would have said, even in jest, that folks should take advantage of the late kickoff to get snockered so they’ll be loud and obnoxious in the stands, the complaints would be flowing like, well, water.”
