"Pennington, he's got it. Throw to first. He did it! He did it! Dallas Braden has thrown a perfect game. Holy cow — he did it!" (MLB)
Oakland A's pitcher Dallas Braden threw a no-hitter on Mother's Day. The fact, he had lost his own mother to skin cancer nine years ago set the stage for what is sure to be one of the most memorable moments in sports in 2010.
We're looking at perspectives from Comcast, Foxsports.com, ESPN and more.
As memorable a game as it was, it was the hug Braden had for his grandmother who raised him after his mother's death that has everyone in the sports world and beyond talking. Here it is on Fox Sports.
"His grandmother who raised him upon the death of his mother is here. Peggy Lindsey — his grandmother. And she cannot believe what she has just witnessed. On Mother's Day, the greatest gift of all from Dallas Braden to his grandmother, Peggy Lindsay. It gives me chills just watching it. Incredible. (long sobbing). There's nothing to do but watch that."
Before this weekend, the most people knew of Dallas Braden was a recently, highly-publicized run-in with one of the game's stars Alex Rodriguez, after ARod ran across the mound after making an out. Here's what a blogger at Yahoo! Sports had to say about that.
"On one hand, it's nice for A's fans to see that one of their young guns won't cede any ground.... on the other, there's something to be said for knowing your spot in the game... Braden may get there one day ... but he's not quite there yet."
ESPN's Michael Wilbon said then of Braden that he needed to talk less and do more.
"Here's my problem with Braden, Jay. He let a guy come into his house, and he didn't do anything about it. And now he's talking about knuckles. Dude. He was right in your kitchen, in your wheelhouse, and you didn't do Jack. Now, you're talking."
After Braden's perfect game, it seems bygones are bygones. ARod told ESPNNewYork.com's Andrew Marchand, it was a win-win for him.
"Rodriguez said: 'Good for him, he threw a perfect game. And better yet, he beat the Rays'."
