A woman is facing manslaughter charges in connection with a home medical procedure that went terribly wrong. According to WNBC, Justin Street, the deceased, visited the woman in hopes of having a penile enhancement procedure.
“A 34-year-old East Orange woman is facing manslaughter charges in connection with an at-home, botched, penile enhancement procedure. Investigators say Kasia Rivera injected silicone into the penis of a 22 year-old man in May. He died the next day of silicone embolism. Rivera also faces the charge of unauthorized practice of medicine. Prosecutors are asking other possible victims to come forward.”
A writer for Gather says Street was apparently attending a ‘pumping party’. What’s that? Apparently, it’s like a Tupperware party, but for black-market cosmetic procedures.
“Who thinks up the idea of a "Pumping Party?" Insanity aside, the fake doctor without a license botched the job.”
In an article for the Daily Mail it says there are economic factors behind the emergence of these parties.
“But blackmarket illegal use by untrained practitioners continues as a quick-fix budget alternative to cosmetic surgery. Doctors say the slow economy has also fuelled the trade.”
Finally, Jezebel says this serves as a reminder about how far people will go to satisfy their body image woes.
“The latest case is a reminder that it's not just women who have body insecurities or who will go to great lengths to change their appearance — all the cases should remind us that only licensed professionals should perform plastic surgery.”
Rivera is awaiting trial and her bail has been set at $75, 000.
