Boeing debuted its new 787 ‘Dreamliner’ passenger airplane. during its inaugural flight from Houston to Chicago O’Hare Sunday afternoon. CLTV talked with a passenger after the flight. Here’s what she thought.

“A lot more calming if you’re scared of flying. The cabin pressure is a lot lower here. The atmosphere, the lights, it’s just a lot more calming.”

So, what makes this plane so special? It has a lot to do with the material it’s made out of. HLN and KCEN explain.

“The 787 has been called a revolutionary plane because of its lightweight construction which should cut fuel costs, that’s the goal.”

Tthe fuel- efficient Dreamliner is the first mid-sized plane capable of flying big-jet distances, making it possible for airlines to offer new, non-stop routes.”

Boeing says the plane also features...
- Dynamic LED lighting (that changes moods from landing, relaxation, meal and sleep lighting)
- Bigger Windows (With adjustable tint to dim them)
- More stowage space
and
- Lower Fuel Consumption (when compared with early and current jets)

The cockpit even has some pretty high tech pieces, including a Dual Head-Up display for each pilot.

“The HUD allows each pilot to see the big picture and critical flight information at the same time. … The Head-Up display helps minimize costly ground delays during periods of low visibility.”

Sounds pretty impressive, right? Well, Bloomberg Businessweek points out the plane’s launch hasn’t gone exactly as planned.

“Boeing’s struggles with the new materials and production techniques contributed to delays of more than 3 1/2 years in the Dreamliner’s commercial debut ... United received its initial plane in September, and the second one was several days late.”

United now has two of these planes and expects to get three more by the end of the year. According to USA Today, the company has ordered a total of 50 Dreamliners in all.
