Sportscaster Bob Costas made comments at halftime during NBC’s Sunday Night Football blaming the lack of gun restrictions for the tragic murder-suicide involving a Kansas City Chiefs player. Costas quoted an article by Fox Sports commentator, Jason Whitlock.

“Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.”

“Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy.”

Facebook and Twitter were buzzing with comments from viewers after Costas spoke on the issue, and many of them aren't happy about what he said. KTVT and WTXF have some of the feedback.

“...NBC Sports’ Facebook page was flooded with people demanding Costas’ firing. There’s even a “Fire Bob Costas” Facebook page.”

“‘Does Bob Costas know that people are murdered every day by means other than gunshots? Removing guns will not stop psychos from killing people.’ Of course Kelce was only one of so many people to weigh in on both sides … ”

Not all of the comments were negative, though. A commentator for CNN had this to say.

I think he was feeling emotional about it. I think you should cut him a break. This was something incredibly tragic that happened … It was an emotional moment. he's been covering sports for a long time.”

Here are a few of the comments made on Twitter.
Thank you, Bob Costas, for saying what needed to be said on national television. The number of guns in our society makes everyone less safe.”

Another user writes: “Next time focus attention on mental illness and domestic violence. Both are bigger problems than gun control.”

And NFL player Chris Harris tweeted: “Bob Costas just spoke some truth and real profound stuff on the
#SNF halftime show.”

NBC has yet to release any statement on Costas’s comments.
