If your holiday shopping list includes a Blackberry PlayBook-- you may want to check it twice. Best Buy is reportedly cancelling recent orders of the troubled tablet. Phone Arena explains.
“Reports are pouring in that people are having their PlayBook orders cancelled. Some have received out of stock or processing errors, but overall have not been given an explanation...”
So what’s the reason for the short stock? Electronista says -- selling at just $199, down $300 from its $499 launch price -- it’s most likely the draw of the deal.
“The most probable explanation is a short term sales rush that has cleared out stock, repeating the same flood of customers that triggered HP TouchPad sellouts.”
But writers at PadGadget think there might be more to the story, noting some curious behavior from Best Buy.
“It is unusual for Best Buy to pull listings of items that are only temporarily out of stock, so this may be an indication that the retailer plans to drop the poorly selling PlayBook from its inventory...”
And while ZDNet commends Best Buy, who has yet to address the rumors, for promptly removing the PlayBook-- they’re still in the dark about how the company allowed demand to exceed supply.
“At least BestBuy.com is removing listings of the unavailable tablets from its website quickly, leaving just the accessories online to not give consumers false hope. But it still begs the question: Is it that difficult for any retailer to just sell the number of units it has in its warehouse?”
Finally, if the Best Buy move isn’t an indication that the PlayBook is on its death bed, SlashGear argues that it may very well be headed that way.
“With more competitors on the market already and the PlayBook lacking basic functionality like native email, in its current form the tablet is a very tough sell.”
