Pro football player and top Chicago drug dealer? The Chicago Bears’ Sam Hurd was arrested Wednesday night on federal drug charges. ESPN has more.

“He allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent. In addition, he stands accused of attempting to establish a drug distribution network.”

According to the informant, that distribution network would entail five to ten kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week -- feds’ estimated value: $700,000. A Chicago radio station has the details on where those drugs could have been going.

“[He] was a top drug dealer in Chicago and police have a list of NFL players who were supplied drugs by the receiver...The list is in the double-digits.”

Meanwhile, WMAQ reports Hurd’s suspicious activities have been going on for months.

“This case began in July in Texas when a federal informant working for immigration and customs enforcement told agents he had information that Bears’ wide receiver Sam Hurd was attempting to buy four kilograms of cocaine from a supplier in the Dallas area. The man alleged to be Hurd’s Dallas contact was arrested with a large amount of marijuana and $88,000 of cash in Hurd’s car.”

Taking a more humorous look, sports blog “Big Lead Sports” writes -- Hurd might have had big plans, but he still had some learning to do if he wanted to be a kingpin.

Hurd inquired of the informant at yesterday’s meeting whether he had access to Mexican cellular telephones, because Hurd believed law enforcement couldn’t listen to Mexican cell phones.”

According to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Sean Jensen, an arraignment for Hurd is scheduled for Thursday.
